WorldNet seeking to extend telephone services

WorldNet LLC is working to extend its telephone services to Eudora, Tonganoxie and Basehor by year’s end.

The company — an affiliate of The World Company, the Lawrence-based media company that also owns the Journal-World — opens formal discussions next week with the Eudora City Council about providing phone service in town.

Council members are scheduled to discuss the issue Monday, during their 7:30 p.m. meeting at City Hall, 4 E. Seventh St.

WorldNet already provides phone service on 10,000 lines in Lawrence, using the cable system owned by Sunflower Broadband, a division of The World Company.

Sunflower Broadband recently upgraded its system in Eudora to allow for future telephone service and to improve reliability of existing cable-television and Internet services, said Patrick Knorr, director of strategic planning for The World Company.

Discussions with city officials have not yet started in Tonganoxie and Basehor, but WorldNet intends to offer phone service in the three cities by the end of 2003, Knorr said.

“By bundling our services, just like we’ve been able to do in Lawrence, we’re able to provide an incredible value to our customers on one monthly bill,” Knorr said. “That’s something we hope to roll out to all customers we serve.”
