Categorized art show connects with art lovers

Music, theater, tours round out weekend

It’s a safe bet most gallery-goers haven’t seen a show with an evolution quite like the one that opened this weekend at Signs of Life, 722 Mass.

Kansas University art history professor David Cateforis started with a CD of images created by gallery artists and began categorizing the works in broad sweeps — grouping landscapes with landscapes, figures with figures, abstracts with abstracts. But then he started noticing more acute connections — several pieces included apples, for instance — and he honed the categories.

Rather than displaying the show in a more traditional style (clustering a single artist’s works together), Cateforis and gallery director James Schaefer hung the exhibit, “Making Connections,” by categories. But Cateforis says his intentions go beyond pointing out what the pieces share. He hopes comparing the artworks will help viewers appreciate the unique qualities each brings to the gallery.

Cateforis gives a gallery talk at 5 p.m. today. Some other weekend entertainment options:
