Arvin Bennett Powell

Services for Arvin Bennett Powell, 79, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Powell died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

He was born Nov. 19, 1924, in Huntsville, Ark., the son of Clyde W. and Alpha L. Brooks Powell.

Mr. Powell served in the U.S. Army Paratroopers as a staff sergeant during World War II in the South Pacific. He worked at the Lawrence Paper Co. for 33 years until he retired in 1989. He was a member of Alford-Clark Post No. 852 of Veterans of Foreign Wars and a former member of Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14 of the American Legion.

He married Dorothy M. Ikenberry on Feb. 11, 1955, in Lawrence. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Roger A., Lawrence, and Brian W., Tonganoxie; a daughter, Karen S. Boyle, Lawrence; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.

The family suggests memorials to the Douglas County Visiting Nurses, sent in care of the mortuary.
