Pettitte to undergo season-ending surgery

Philadelphia — Andy Pettitte’s lost season came to an end Wednesday when the Houston Astros announced the pitcher would have surgery on his troublesome left elbow next week.

Pettitte was put on the 15-day disabled list for the third time this season. Dr. James Andrews will do the surgery Tuesday to repair a torn flexor tendon.

Pettitte, 32, will start rehabilitation the day after surgery and be in a brace for up to six weeks. He will resume throwing 12-to-16 weeks after the procedure.

The former All-Star joined the hometown Astros in December, leaving the New York Yankees as a free agent to sign a $31.5 million, three-year contract. But Pettitte tore a tendon in his elbow in his Houston debut — while batting, of all things — and has not been right all season.

Pettitte was 6-4 with a 3.90 ERA in 15 starts for the Astros, who have had a disappointing season after coming in with high expectations. Even with Roger Clemens joining the rotation in the winter and the midseason acquisition of Carlos Beltran, the Astros fell out of the NL Central race and faded in the wild-card chase.

Tigers’ Rodriguez has sore right hip

Chicago — Detroit catcher Ivan Rodriguez was a late scratch from the Tigers’ lineup Wednesday night because of a sore right hip. The 11-time All-Star was replaced by Brandon Inge for the Tigers’ game against the Chicago White Sox, and is listed as day to day. Rodriguez is batting .338.

Diamondbacks lose Hill

Phoenix — The Arizona Diamondbacks placed catcher Koyie Hill on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday, a day after he broke his right ankle in a collision at the plate.

Chisox skipper Guillen released from hospital

Chicago — White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was back at the ballpark Wednesday after spending one night in a hospital because of a kidney stone. Guillen passed the kidney stone during his team’s 11-8 loss to Detroit on Tuesday night and was released from the hospital Wednesday morning.

“That was something I don’t wish anybody has, even my worst enemy,” Guillen said.

He was to skip Wednesday night’s game against the Tigers to complete the two-game suspension he began serving Tuesday.

Baltimore’s Hairston sidelined for season

Baltimore — Jerry Hairston will be lost to the Baltimore Orioles for the rest of the season after breaking his left ankle trying to catch a home-run ball in center field.

Hairston, a converted second baseman, landed awkwardly Tuesday night after leaping in vain to snare a home run by Oakland’s Adam Melhuse in the eighth inning of the Orioles’ 11-0 loss.

Hairston arrived at Camden Yards on Wednesday walking on crutches and wearing a look of gloom. It was not an unfamiliar scenario; Hairston missed half of last season with a broken right foot and started this season on the disabled list with a broken finger.

“It’s just another freak injury,” he said. “I’ve had a string of freak things happen the last couple of years. I kind of feel frustrated and angry because I want to play. I really was starting to have fun.”

Indians reliever Stewart traded to Dodgers

Los Angeles — The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired reliever Scott Stewart from Cleveland on Wednesday, one day after finding out that setup man Darren Dreifort may be lost for the season.

The NL West leaders sent a player to be named or cash to the Indians for Stewart.

Stewart was 0-2 with a 7.24 ERA in 23 games with the Indians this season.
