Humane Society plans fund-raiser

The 2004 Mutt and Strut benefit for the Lawrence Humane Society will be May 8 and volunteers are needed to help. At this carnival and dog-walk event, volunteers can assist with manning booths that sell fund-raising items, working at game booths, attending to dogs while owners register, handing out water to walkers and dogs on the walk course, and event setup and cleanup. Volunteers must be 16 or older. The event will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sunflower School, 2521 Inverness Drive. For more information, call the number above or e-mail lawhumane@aol.com.

Immediate volunteer needs

  • The Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H., needs volunteer ushers for theater events throughout the year. Opportunities to volunteer are flexible.   • The First Step House needs volunteers to assist with an outdoor project to beautify the yard. Volunteers who can use shovels to move dirt are needed. Outside window cleaning is also needed. Groups are welcome to volunteer. For more information, call Jean Skuban at 843-9262.
  • Watkins Community Museum of History, 1047 Mass., is looking for more volunteer greeters. No experience is necessary. For more information, call Patsy at 841-4109.
  • The Lawrence Convention and Visitors Bureau invites local nonprofit organizations to participate in the Kansas Chautauqua events in Lawrence’s South Park June 24-29 by operating concessions as a fund-raising opportunity. Organizations must provide any needed paper goods, serving containers or utensils. Organizations will receive a 10-by-10-foot open-air booth space with tables and chairs. Electrical hookups will be available, but organizations must provide extension cords. The fee per booth space is $25 an evening or $100 for all six nights.
