Churches plan Easter celebrations

Several Lawrence churches have Easter services planned for Sunday.

Here’s a roundup of the church’s Easter activities:

Calvary Temple Assembly of God

A continental breakfast will be served at 9 a.m. Sunday at Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 W. 29th St. Terrace.

Sunday school for all ages will be at 9:30 a.m., followed by 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship.

There will be an Easter egg hunt at noon Sunday for children up to age 11.

Centenary United Methodist Church

Centenary United Methodist Church, 245 N. Fourth St., will have two Easter Sunday worship services. Amanda Larsen and the church youth will lead worship at 8 a.m. The Rev. Judy Long O’Neal will lead the 10:30 a.m. worship service.

An all-church breakfast will be at 9 a.m. in the fellowship hall.

Children will be invited to join in an Easter egg hunt at 9:45 a.m.

Sunday school for all ages will be at 9:45 a.m.

Central United Methodist Church

Central United Methodist Church, 1501 Mass., will have a 10:45 a.m. Easter Sunday worship service. Special music will be provided by the church choirs.

Corpus Christi Catholic Church

There will be 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Easter Sunday Masses at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 6001 W. 15th St.

Crosspointe Church

There will be 10:30 a.m. Easter Sunday worship services at Crosspointe Church, which meets at Bishop Seabury Academy, 4120 Clinton Parkway. Service will have contemporary worship music and a message by the Rev. Beau Abernathy, “The Passion of the Christ … The Rest of the Story.”

First Christian Church

There will be a 9 a.m. traditional worship service, and an 11 a.m. contemporary service, Easter Sunday at First Christian Church, 1000 Ky.

The Rev. Randy Beeman’s Easter message will be “A Grave Situation.”

The brass ensemble will play “Simple Gifts,” and there will be special music, at both services.

First Church of the Nazarene

Children are invited to participate in an Easter egg hunt, craft activity and snack time today at First Church of the Nazarene, 1470 N. 1000 Road. Children through age 3 are invited to participate from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., and children from age 4 through sixth grade are invited from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Resurrection celebration service will be at 10:15 a.m. Sunday.

First Presbyterian Church

The Rev. Raymond J. Fancher, interim senior pastor, will be in the pulpit for all three Easter Sunday worship services at First Presbyterian Church, 2415 Clinton Parkway. Resurrection Sunday services will be at 8 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Immanuel Lutheran Church and University Student Center

There will be worship services at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Easter Sunday at Immanuel Lutheran Church and University Student Center, 2104 W. 15th St. The 8:30 a.m. service is traditional, while the 11 a.m. service is contemporary. Breakfast will be served by the youth group from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Lake View Manor

There will be a 7:30 a.m. Easter Sunday sunrise worship service at Lakeview Manor, 3015 W. 31st St. The Rev. Steve Colladay, interim pastor of Unity Church of Lawrence, Ninth Street and Madeline Lane, will conduct the service.

Lawrence Bible Chapel

There will be a 7:45 a.m. Easter Sunday sunrise service, followed by a pancake breakfast, at Lawrence Bible Chapel, 505 Monterey Way.

Lawrence Wesleyan Church

There will be a 10:30 a.m. Easter egg hunt and petting zoo for children of all ages today at Lawrence Wesleyan Church, 3705 Clinton Parkway. There will be worship services at 8:30 a.m., 9:45 a.m. and 11 a.m. Easter Sunday. Doughnuts, coffee and juice will be offered after each service.

Plymouth Congregational Church

The ninth-grade confirmation class will lead the 7:30 a.m. Easter Sunday service at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt.

The 9:30 a.m. traditional Sunday service will feature the bell choir, the adult chancel choir and the Cherub Choir, as well as the Kansas Brass Quintet.

The 11:15 a.m. contemporary Sunday service will feature the senior high youth performing excerpts from the musical “Godspell.”

Redeemer Lutheran Church

The 10th annual community Easter egg hunt will be at 10 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2700 Lawrence Ave. It is free and open to the children up to age 10.

There will be a 9 a.m. Easter Sunday worship service with Holy Communion. It will be conducted by the Rev. John Hopkins, vacancy pastor, from Calvary Lutheran Church in Topeka.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church

A special reception for those being baptized will take place after the 8 p.m. Easter Vigil celebration today at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St.

Celebration Singers and Ringers will lead the singing at the 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Easter Sunday worship services.

The Meadowlark String Quartet and Remi Sabaliauskas will provide special music at the 10:45 a.m. Sunday service and accompany the choir in the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah.

Praise Band will lead special Easter music at the 5:30 p.m. Sunday service.

The children will present their Lenten offerings and donations for the Humane Society at all Sunday services.

Trinity Episcopal Church

The first Easter service of the Episcopal Church, the Great Vigil of Easter, begins at 7 p.m. today at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt.

There will be worship services at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Easter Sunday.

The 10:30 a.m. service will begin with an Easter fanfare, featuring the Trinity adult choir with organ, brass and tympani. The choir will also perform the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah.

Trinity Lutheran Church

There will be a 7 p.m. Easter Vigil service today at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H. The service includes the salvation story, affirmation of baptism and celebration of word and sacrament.

There will be 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Easter Sunday worship services, with an Easter brunch and children’s egg hunt at 9:45 a.m. New members will be introduced at the brunch in the church’s fellowship hall.

Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence

A spiritual celebration, “The Origins of Easter,” presented by Tim Miller, professor of religious studies at Kansas University, will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 N. 1100 Road.

George Szonyi will present a program, “Religious Traditions of Transylvania,” from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

An Easter supper will be from noon to 1 p.m. Sunday.

University Community of Christ

There will be a special 7:30 a.m. Easter Sunday worship service, followed by breakfast, at University Community of Christ, 1900 University Drive.

Each family is encouraged to bring a breakfast dish. An Easter egg hunt for children will follow breakfast.

The Rev. Avanelle Mercer will deliver the Easter sermon, “I Have Seen the Lord,” during the 10 a.m. Sunday worship service.

The potluck luncheon normally scheduled for the second Sunday of each month has been canceled this month.

West Side Presbyterian Church

“The Power of the Cross” will be addressed by the Rev. Patricia Slider during the 11 a.m. Easter Sunday worship service at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive.

Bell choir will present the “Antiphonal Fanfare” from the balcony and the floor to celebrate Easter.

There will also be an opportunity Sunday to contribute to the offering for the One Great Hour of Sharing.
