KU grad among year’s Pulitzer Prize winners

A Kansas University graduate was among those winning Pulitzer Prizes announced Monday.

Kevin Helliker, a Kansas City, Kan., native who graduated from KU in 1982, won with fellow Wall Street Journal reporter Thomas M. Burton for their examination of aneurysms.

Helliker started his professional career at the paper in 1982. He also spent time at the Kansas City Times and the Corporate Report Kansas City magazine before rejoining the Journal. He was named Dallas bureau chief in 1994 and Chicago bureau chief in May 1996.

Perry-Lecompton sets kindergarten screenings

Perry-Lecompton schools will have their kindergarten screenings today at Perry Elementary School and Thursday at Lecompton Elementary School.

Children in the Grantville, Perry and Williamstown attendance areas should attend today’s screening, while children in the Lecompton attendance area should go to Thursday’s screening. Parents of children who will be 5 years old on or before Aug. 31 are asked to contact the appropriate school at (785) 887-6343 for Lecompton Elementary or (785) 597-5156 for Perry Elementary to arrange a time for screening.

KU alumnus to lead Florida law school

A Kansas University graduate has been named dean of the Florida Coastal School of Law.

Peter Goplerud, who had been dean of the Drake University Law School in Des Moines, Iowa, for the past six years, received his bachelor’s degree in English from KU in 1971.

Goplerud received his law degree from KU in 1974.

Prior to his tenure in Des Moines, Goplerud clerked for former Kansas Supreme Court Justice David Prager and also was on the faculty of the University of Akron (Ohio) School of Law.
