Spurs make statement

Defending champs knock off Lakers, 95-89

? With so much attention focused on the Lakers, Kings and Timberwolves, it’s easy to forget that San Antonio is the reigning NBA champion.

The Spurs served a strong reminder Sunday.

Tony Parker had 29 points and nine assists, and the Spurs beat the Los Angeles Lakers, 95-89, for their sixth straight victory, moving them within 11/2 games of the Western Conference lead.

Tim Duncan added 18 points, 13 rebounds and six assists, and Bruce Bowen and Manu Ginobili scored 12 points each for the Spurs (52-25), who have won eight of nine to move into contention for the Midwest Division title and No. 1 seed in the West.

“Every year it’s like this — it’s not new to us,” Duncan said. “It doesn’t matter. We’re going to keep playing, and we’re going to hopefully be in position to make a run at the end. That’s all we’re playing for. We’re not playing for attention.

“Every year it’s the same way — every year it’s about somebody else. Hopefully, we’ll sneak in the back door and people forget about us.”

The Lakers, who had their 11-game winning streak snapped, certainly aren’t overlooking the Spurs.

“They’re the defending champions until somebody beats them,” Kobe Bryant said. “We were in that position before.”

San Antonio won the championship in 1999 before Los Angeles won the next three. The Spurs won last year, eliminating the Lakers along the way.

San Antonio's Tony Parker shoots as Los Angeles' Derek Fisher, left, gets out of the way. Parker had 29 points and nine assists as the Spurs won, 95-89, Sunday in Los Angeles.

The Lakers entered with an NBA-best 22-4 record since the All-Star break.

“That was a really good win for us against a very tough team — a team that’s played better than anybody in the league right now,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.

Parker shot just 1-of-11 in his last game — a 94-81 victory at Utah. He was 10-of-22 against the Lakers.

“I got a good rhythm,” he said. “I shot bad last game. I knew if I could make a couple of outside shots, it would open it up for Timmy.”

The Lakers dropped into third place in the West — a half-game behind the Sacramento Kings and Minnesota Timberwolves, who both won Sunday.

Bryant led the Lakers (53-24) with 28 points and six rebounds, but he shot just 9-of-26 while being guarded closely by Bowen.

Gary Payton had 21 points and eight rebounds; Shaquille O’Neal added 17 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots, and Karl Malone had 12 points and nine rebounds.

Timberwolves 90, Grizzlies 82

Minneapolis — Sam Cassell scored a season-high 36 points, and Kevin Garnett had 14 points and 22 rebounds in the Timberwolves’ fifth straight victory. James Posey scored 19 points, Pau Gasol had 15, and Jason Williams had 10 points and 10 assists for Memphis, which had its seven-game winning streak snapped. Garnett posted his 68th double-double to tie his franchise record set last season.

Pistons 79, Pacers 61

Auburn Hills, Mich. — Richard Hamilton scored 24 points, and Detroit’s defense stifled Indiana. Detroit held the Pacers to a season-low for points and 34.2 percent shooting in a matchup of teams with the top two records in the Eastern Conference. Ron Artest scored 16 points for the Pacers.

Kings 99, Rockets 94

Houston — Peja Stojakovic had 28 points and 11 rebounds, and Chris Webber added 19 points to lead Sacramento. Yao Ming had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and Jim Jackson added 18 points for the Rockets, who lost their fourth straight.

Toronto — Brian Skinner had 19 points and a season-high 14 rebounds to help the Bucks clinch a playoff spot. Michael Redd added 17 points for the Bucks. Jalen Rose had 21 points for the lottery-bound Raptors, who have lost seven straight. Toronto fired general manager Glen Grunwald last week, and before Sunday’s game coach Kevin O’Neill was talking like he didn’t think he’d be back next season.

Wizards 112, Celtics 102

Washington — Gilbert Arenas scored 32 points, including a four-point play with 1:25 left. Marcus Banks led the Celtics with a career-high 24 points on 11-for-13 shooting. Paul Pierce added 17 points and tied his career-high with 13 assists. He also had seven rebounds. With five games remaining, the Celtics hold a 21/2-game lead over Cleveland for the eighth and final spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Nets 106, Hawks 89

East Rutherford, N.J. — Richard Jefferson had 20 points and a career-high 12 assists for the Nets, who won their third straight game. Kerry Kittles added 16 points, and the Nets overcame the continued absence of Jason Kidd and Kenyon Martin by shooting 53.7 percent from the field and getting double-figure scoring from seven players.

Sonics 96, Hornets 88

Seattle — Ray Allen scored 25 points, leading five Seattle players in double figures, and the SuperSonics snapped a four-game losing streak. Brent Barry had 14 points, nine rebounds and six assists, while Rashard Lewis scored 14 points. Reggie Evans had 12 rebounds, and Ronald Murray and Calvin Booth each scored 12 points, matching a season high for Booth.

Jazz 97, Clippers 92

Los Angeles — Andrei Kirilenko scored 18 points, and Carlos Arroyo got nine of his 15 points in the fourth quarter. Utah, vying for its 21st consecutive playoff berth, tied Denver for the eighth and final Western Conference berth.
