Randle sentenced to two days in jail

Kansas University running back John Randle will serve two days in the Douglas County Jail later this month after being sentenced Friday in municipal court on charges of attempted theft, disorderly conduct and having a fake driver’s license.

The sentencing came after he pleaded guilty Friday to the disorderly conduct and fake-ID charges in connection with an altercation March 5 outside The Granada, 1020 Mass. As part of the plea agreement, a charge of interfering with the duties of a police officer was dropped, city prosecutor Jerry Little said.

The attempted-theft charge stemmed from the theft of beer Nov. 19 at a Lawrence convenience store. Randle initially was charged with theft but had the charge reduced last month as part of a plea agreement.

Randle also was ordered to pay $450 in fines. A judge applied Randle’s previous bond payment of $200 to that amount and gave him the option of working off the remaining amount by doing community service at $5 per hour, Little said.

KU kick returner Greg Heaggans, 20, also suspected in the convenience-store incident, is working to have the charge dropped by entering a diversion program and agreeing to pay a $200 fee and $32 in court costs, Little said.

Randle also was arrested Nov. 2 on suspicion of domestic battery and criminal damage to property. Charges never were filed in connection with that incident.

KU coach Mark Mangino couldn’t be reached for comment. He recently said it was unlikely the running back would be removed from the team, but there would be “consequences.”
