Jon and Nikki King, Lawrence, announce the birth of a son, James Nicholas King, born March 19, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

  • Bill and Allison Brown, Olathe, announce the birth of a daughter, Kalista Dillon Brown, born March 7, 2004, at Olathe Medical Center. She has a sister, Kylee Brown, 2. Maternal grandparents are Don and Mary Beary, Lenexa. Paternal grandparents are Bob and Sharon Brown, Lawrence. Great-grandmother is Catherine Beary, Albia, Iowa.
  • The Oskaloosa High School Class of 1954 will celebrate its 50th reunion April 10. The festivities begin at 10 a.m. at the Eagles Lodge on West Washington Street in Oskaloosa. Members of other classes are welcome to join the celebration in the afternoon.   • The University Women’s Club has selected four recipients for its 2004-2005 annual scholarship awards. The Kansas University students who received the awards for their high academic and personal achievements were Brooke Barrett, Overland Park; Jessica Kimple, Beloit; Michelle Moran, Overland Park; and Michelle Tran, Derby. They received the awards Thursday during the club’s awards luncheon. Additional awards were announced for Alexis Bannwarth, April Bradshaw, Jamie Labrier, Justina Patterson, Shannon Snapp and Maya Tuylieva. Club members have provided financial aid to deserving KU students for 89 years.
  • Anna Robertson, a Free State High School student, received an honorable mention for her work in the Kansas Junior Duck Stamp Contest. Her work is among the 100 award winners that will be on display at the 2004 Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson. There were 602 entries.
  • Ottawa University announces its Presidential Scholarship winners. They are Ashley Ford, Indianola, Iowa; Phuong Huynh, Ottawa, foreign exchange student from Hong Kong; Stephanie Henderson, Yuba City, Calif.; and Brad Shelor, Kansas City, Mo. The scholarships are given to prospective first-year students who show outstanding academic merit and extracurricular involvement. Students are selected based upon their performance at Scholarship Competition Day, which was March 6. The competition consists of an essay contest and interviews with Ottawa University faculty and administrators. The essay topic was “What It Means To Claim an Education.”
