KU fans suddenly hungry for tickets

Jayhawk ticket office becomes a hotbed of activity after Mangino's squad moves to 4-1 with rout of MU

Kansas University football players said after Saturday’s 35-14 victory over Missouri that a bye week wouldn’t stop the momentum of their four-game winning streak.

The fact the Jayhawks won’t play another home game until Oct. 18 against Baylor hasn’t cooled the fervor of Kansas fans, either.

“The phone’s been busy all day,” said KU director of ticket operations Rodney Jones. “I wouldn’t say we were swamped like we were last week, but I’d say we were consistently busy. I think with the excitement from the big win the other day people are trying to buy tickets for all the remaining home games.”

Kansas (4-1, 1-0 Big 12 Conference) drew a sellout crowd for Saturday’s victory in the league opener, but the Jayhawks will play only one home game in the next five weeks.

“Strictly from a marketing standpoint, I wish we had a game Saturday,” said associate athletic director Jim Marchiony. “But that’s not practical in competitive terms. It’s probably good for the team to have an off week.”

KU coach Mark Mangino reiterated during Monday’s Big 12 teleconference that the Jayhawks needed time off to recover from nagging injuries before playing Oct. 11 at Colorado (2-2).

The Jayhawks’ remaining home games are an Oct. 18 homecoming date with Baylor, Nov. 8 against Nebraska and the Nov. 22 regular-season finale against Iowa State.

About 31,000 tickets have been sold for the Baylor game, and that number likely will climb in the next three weeks.

“It gives us some time to process orders and put stuff in the mail instead of putting everything at will call,” said Jones, whose office had to open six will-call windows — instead of the usual two — after fans made a late rush for Missouri tickets.

Kansas University yell leaders race past a frenzied crowd carrying Kansas flags after the Jayhawks scored a touchdown in the first half against Missouri Saturday at Memorial Stadium. The KU ticket office has been inundated with calls from ticket-hungry fans after the win over the Tigers improved KU's record to 4-1.

The MU game marked KU’s first home sellout since Nebraska fans helped fill Memorial Stadium in 2001. This time, the crowd wore blue.

“Winning puts people in the seats,” Mangino said. “When I first arrived here, people told me about these marketing campaigns, and we continue to have marketing campaigns. I think they’re great because they bring out an awareness about football. But from the day I arrived here I told people that winning is the only thing that fills the stadium.

“We’re finding some success early. We’ve always had a loyal core of fans, and now that fan base is expanding. Our student body is extremely excited and had great enthusiasm Saturday. What it boils down to is, if you put a good product on the field and you win, then people will come and support it. It creates a tremendous, big-time college atmosphere that every program strives to have.”

Goal-post gift: A Williams Fund member, whose name was not released, presented a $7,000 check to KU’s athletic department Monday to replace the goal posts that were torn down in Saturday’s postgame celebration.

“That’s nice, indicative of the spirit that Mark Mangino, his staff and team are engendering here,” Marchiony said.

The new posts will come from Gilman Gear in Connecticut within a week, Marchiony said.

While Kansas doesn’t have another home game for three weeks, Free State High is scheduled to play its Oct. 10 home game against Olathe North at Memorial Stadium. The Firebirds’ game Friday is at Leavenworth.

No TV: The Jayhawks’ game at Colorado won’t be televised. Kickoff has been set for 2:30 p.m. Central time. Three Big 12 Conference games will be televised that day — Kansas State at Oklahoma State, Oklahoma vs. Texas at Dallas and Nebraska at Missouri. The KSU-OSU contest will start at 11:30 a.m. and be carried on Fox Sports Midwest. ABC will have the OU-Texas game at 2:30 p.m. and NU-MU will be broadcast by TBS at 6 p.m.

Noting CU: Colorado coach Gary Barnett said during Monday’s teleconference the Buffs didn’t use their bye week to start preparing for Saturday’s game against Baylor, opting instead to focus on fundamentals after stumbling to a 2-2 start against a tough nonconference schedule. Barnett also said injured running back Bobby Purify would miss the Baylor and KU games.

KU players of the week: KU’s coaches selected sophomore tailback Clark Green offensive player of the week after he led KU with 78 yards rushing and two touchdowns against Mizzou. Senior cornerback Remuise Johnson was the defensive player of the week, while freshman punt returner Charles Gordon and sophomore Kevin Kane shared special-team honors.
