Perry-Lecompton’s late rally not enough to trip Lansing

? Despite scoring two touchdowns with less than three minutes left, Perry-Lecompton ran out of magic, losing Friday to Lansing, 35-28.

At least the Kaws’ two scores in 90 seconds made things interesting.

“We showed up in the end, but we showed up too late,” said P-L sophomore wide receiver Daniel Hemme, who led the Kaws (1-3) with seven receptions for 76 yards.

After hauling in a 15-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback David Foltz, sophomore tight end Gabe Gantz recovered an onside kick with 2:56 left in the game.

Moments later, sophomore running back Cory McPherson caught a 13-yard pass from Foltz, and a two-point conversion run by Sean Blosser cut Lansing’s lead to seven.

But it was too little, too late.

“I thought we showed a lot of courage,” Foltz said. “I wish we would have had the win, though. All the stats in the world won’t make up for how I feel about the loss.”

Foltz completed 15 of 33 passes for 219 yards and three touchdowns. The Kaws rolled up 348 offensive yards; Lansing (2-2) had 329.

The Kaws might have won if Lansing sophomore running back Jeff Slater had missed the bus.

Slater accounted for 117 yards on 18 carries, including touchdown runs of 42 and 10 yards.

He also had a 77-yard touchdown reception, and he blocked a punt in the fourth quarter.

“He was the go-to-guy,” P-L coach Mike Paramore said. “We knew going into tonight that he was going to be their workhorse.”

Friday’s loss taught another lesson to Paramore’s sophomore-stocked club — only six seniors start for the Kaws.

“We’re just growing,” Paramore said. We knew that it was going to be this kind of wear, but we took a step forward.”

Foltz said he wanted wins for this year’s seniors.

“It’s not right for them to have a losing season,” Foltz said.

Perry-Lecompton travels Friday to De Soto.
