Sluggish Seahawks fall to Flint Hills Christian

Seabury Academy’s boys soccer team lacked intensity Thursday against Manhattan Flint Hills Christian, and Seahawks coach Shawn Sherlock wasn’t happy about it.

The Seahawks couldn’t mount a substantial drive as the Warriors (3-2) won, 1-0, at the Youth Sports Inc. fields.

Sherlock spent the first half glued to the sideline, imploring his players to push the ball.

“We let (the ball) play around in the defense too long,” Sherlock said. “Most times it doesn’t backfire, but on the goal they scored, the ball was just sitting there.”

The game’s biggest play came from the Warriors’ smallest player when 4-foot-7 Isaac Doolittle scored past Seabury sophomore goalkeeper Paul Bireta in the 28th minute.

“He’s a hustler, an amazing player,” Flint Hills coach Jeremy Wright said. “He knows he’s a little bit quicker than everyone else out there.”

Sherlock said the goal resulted from another fundamental breakdown by his club, a malady that doomed the Seahawks in their previous loss to Olathe Christian.

“We’ve yet to see an outstanding shot against us,” Sherlock said.

Seabury Academy's Ben Levy, right, moves the ball against Manhattan Flint Hills Christian's Kyle Smith. The Seahawks lost, 1-0, Thursday at the Youth Sports Inc. fields.

Sherlock said the bright side was that his team came alive in the last 10 minutes.

“We’re still learning to get through the 80 minutes,” he said. “That was the first time I saw them play that way. It’s just a matter a time, getting them to play like for the first 10 minutes rather then the last 10 minutes.”

Seabury (0-2) was missing two starters — junior defenseman Jake Esau was out because of a broken right toe, and junior forward Allen Park, the team’s top offensive threat, was sidelined because of a stress fracture in his right foot.

Sherlock hopes both can return in a couple of weeks.

“They’re both key players,” he said. “Jake knows the sport. Allen, when he’s healthy, I’d race him against any kid in the city. He’s that fast.”

Seabury will play host Tuesday to Hyman Brand.
