Jayhawks’ Self to have TV show

Basketball coach brings back program

Bill Self’s face will be one of the most recognizable in the Sunflower State this fall and winter.

Self not only will be shown up close and personal during all of Kansas University’s men’s basketball games, which are televised, but also once a week on a coach’s show that is being planned for the 2003-04 season.

“I think it’s important. I think everywhere I’ve been we’ve had a coach’s show,” Self, KU’s first-year hoops coach said Tuesday. “With the facilities available and people we’ll be working with I think it’ll be a show watched by all Jayhawk fans.”

Self’s TV show, to be hosted by Dave Armstrong, KU’s play by play man for Jayhawk-TV games this season, likely will be in a 30-minute format. It will be seen in Lawrence on Sunflower Broadband Channel 6; in Kansas City on KMCI; in Wichita on KWCV and Topeka on WIBW.

The show will likely air on Sunday nights at various times, KU associate athletic director Jim Marchiony said.

“I think it is an example of Bill knowing what the fans want and responding to it,” Marchiony said, noting Self wanted a weekly show. “I think it gives fans a chance to get an insider’s view of what goes on with a basketball program during the season.”

KU women’s coach Marian Washington also will have a show this season. So far it is certain the show will be on in K.C. and in Lawrence, with other stations possible.

Plans are in the works for football coach Mark Mangino to have a show starting next season, too.

KU hoops coaches Roy Williams, Larry Brown and Ted Owens each had TV shows, but Williams’ show ended two years ago in favor of “Jayhawk minutes,” which were shown on the Internet and on TV at various junctures during the season.

The Jayhawk minute spots will also continue.
