New Spencer exhibition highlights Indian artists

A public reception for “American Indian Art at the Spencer Museum” will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today in the museum’s Central Court.

The exhibition includes contemporary paintings, prints, photographs, pottery and glass by contemporary American Indian artists in the museum’s collection, including “Eagle Hat,” above, a blown, sandblasted glass piece by Preston Singletary.

The exhibit complements the Lawrence Indian Arts Show, which opens Friday at Lawrence Arts Center.

Spencer director Andrea Norris, who organized the exhibition, will give a Tour du Jour at 12:15 p.m. today and a gallery talk at 7 p.m. during the opening.

The exhibition will remain on view through Oct. 19 in the White Gallery.

Group marks anniversary of weekly peace vigils

Members of the Lawrence Coalition for Peace and Justice on Saturday will mark the one-year anniversary of their weekly peace vigils at the Douglas County Courthouse.

Anti-war activists have demonstrated every Saturday since Sept. 7, 2002. Crowds have ranged from as few as seven, coalition officials said, to as many as 1,500.

Allan Hanson, the coalition’s coordinator, said protests had continued after the end of major combat in Iraq in order to draw attention to controversy over the reasons for war, and to the continuing combat there.

“We are hoping for an especially large crowd this Saturday to observe the first anniversary of these vigils,” Hanson said in a news release.

The vigil will be noon at the courthouse, 11th and Massachusetts streets.
