Historic District maps on display at library

Plans for five proposed National Historic Districts are on display for the next month in the Lawrence Public Library’s east side gallery, 707 Vt. The display includes maps of the districts — two in east Lawrence, two in the Pinckney Neighborhood, and downtown — and lists of contributing and noncontributing properties.

Properties on the contributing list will be eligible for state and federal tax credits if the district proposals are accepted; those on the noncontributing list will not be eligible.

The display comes after several people who would be subject to stricter regulation under the proposals said they hadn’t received enough information about the process.

It will be up to the State Historic Preservation Office to decide whether to forward the district nominations to the Federal Department of the Interior for final approval.

Judge dismisses scholarship hall lawsuit

More than two years of legal battles between Kansas University and residents of two of its scholarship halls came to an end Monday.

Douglas County District Court Judge Jack Murphy dismissed a lawsuit against KU and Bank of America filed by residents of Miller and Watkins scholarship halls.

The residents sued in 2001, alleging KU and the bank had mismanaged a trust fund left by Elizabeth Miller Watkins for upkeep of their halls. They said the halls had fallen into disrepair.

But the students later said they had found no sign of mismanagement during the last five years, the allowed statute of limitations.

“We’re pleased by the judge’s action,” said Lynn Bretz, a KU spokeswoman. “The university has maintained all along that the allegations were without merit.”
