Atlanta’s Ortiz wins No. 19

Phillies rough up pitcher for four runs in first, go dry in 6-4 loss

? For Russ Ortiz, it was another routine performance.

Same for Kevin Millwood.

Ortiz bounced back from his usual shaky start to earn his career-high 19th win, Millwood got pounded again by his former team and the Atlanta Braves hurt Philadelphia’s playoff drive by rallying for a 6-4 victory Monday.

The Phillies’ six-game winning streak was snapped and they dropped into a tie in the NL wild-card race with Florida, which defeated the New York Mets 5-0.

Ortiz (19-6) gave up four runs in the top of the first, then pitched five scoreless innings while the Braves matched their biggest comeback of the season against Millwood.

“I just kept throwing and trusting it would come back,” said Ortiz, who has given up more runs in the first (26) than any other inning. “When it did, I felt a lot more confident.”

Mark DeRosa hit a two-run homer in the bottom half of the first and scored the go-ahead run in the fifth.

Millwood (14-10), traded from Atlanta to Philadelphia during the winter, has lost all three starts against the Braves this season, his ERA in those games rising to 7.00.

Astros 8, Brewers 4

Milwaukee — Roy Oswalt returned from the disabled list, and Jeff Bagwell and Lance Berkman each had three RBIs.

Oswalt (7-5), sidelined since July 30 with a strained right groin, was activated Monday. The right-hander allowed four runs on five hits in five innings for his first win since July 18.

Marlins 5, Mets 0

New York — Alex Gonzalez homered, and four Florida pitchers combined on a six-hit shutout.

Josh Beckett (8-7) allowed just four hits through six innings, striking out six and walking two.

Florida tied with Philadelphia for the wild card after the Braves beat the Phillies later Monday night. Gonzalez led off the third with his 17th homer and fourth against the Mets this season. It was the only hit starter Steve Trachsel (14-9) allowed in the first five innings.

Pirates 9, Reds 1

Cincinnati — Josh Fogg threw his first major-league complete game, and Craig Wilson homered twice and tied his career high with four RBIs.

Fogg (9-8) gave up 10 hits and no walks while striking out nine — one shy of his career high — to improve to 3-0 in his career — all this season — against the Reds. The complete game was the second in a row for Pittsburgh. Kip Wells went the distance in a 2-1 loss at Atlanta Sunday. John Bale (1-2) allowed six hits, but three of them were homers.

Dodgers 10, D’backs 3

Phoenix — Cesar Izturis went a career-best 5-for-5 and just missed hitting for the cycle.

The Dodgers, winners of four in a row and nine of 11, moved within two games of wild-card leaders Florida and Philadelphia.

Jeromy Burnitz put Los Angeles ahead 6-3 with a three-run homer in the eighth, then Shawn Green sealed it with his sixth career grand slam in the ninth. The Dodgers trail the wild-card leaders by just one game in the loss column with 20 to play.
