Pint-sized watermelons join familiar varieties

Convenience-conscious consumers who enjoy watermelon but balk at carrying home a 10- to 20-pound heavyweight can now look for a diminutive alternative.

Two seedless, round 5-pounders have been introduced this year and are available. Their development didn’t require genetic engineering or biotechnology. Scientists produced the “babies” by crossing two different breeds of watermelon using processes common in today’s agriculture.
