Oompahfest to feature food, music, dancing

Immanuel Lutheran Church and University Student Center will sponsor the third annual Oompahfest Family Fun Festival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in South Park, 12th and Massachusetts streets.

The event, which serves as a fund-raiser for the church’s building fund, will feature authentic German fare, music and folk dancing. John Thompson, of Lawrence, will play the accordion from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Alpen Spielers, a polka band that has toured Europe, will perform from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Blautaler Schuhplattler, a German folk-dancing troupe, will perform from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. For children, there will be games, a fish pond, face painting, a cupcake walk and an appearance by a balloon man.

There will be donation opportunities for a chance to win a vacation worth $3,500 at a location of the winner’s choice. Suggested donation is $10. The winning name will be drawn at Oompahfest’s conclusion.

To celebrate the church’s 75th anniversary, members have compiled a cookbook, titled “Our Daily Bread,” which will be on sale at the festival, along with T-shirts, hats and mugs.
