Outbreak investigation at weekend standstill

An investigation to find the source of a cryptosporidium parasite outbreak in Lawrence continued Sunday with no breakthrough, according to the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department.

So far there have been 22 confirmed cases of cryptosporidium in Lawrence, but no new cases have surfaced since late last week. Stool samples collected since then have yet to be tested by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. KDHE has been closed for the weekend and is closed today for the Labor Day holiday.

“I doubt that they would open up unless we had a lot of samples (to be tested),” said Kay Kent, Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department director. “We haven’t got that many.”

Cryptosporidium is a microscopic parasite that causes diarrhea, stomach cramps, upset stomach and a slight fever. The first cases were detected more than a week ago. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is assisting the health department.
