Rains moves out of area

The weekend drenching is over.

After weeks of virtually no rain and several days of 100-plus degree weather, Lawrence and much of Kansas got a good soaking. A little more than 5 inches of rain fell at Lawrence Municipal Airport from Saturday morning until about 5 p.m. Sunday.

There were no major flooding problems reported in Lawrence. In Franklin County three county roads were closed Sunday near Ottawa because of high water, sheriff’s dispatchers said.

Today’s Labor Day holiday weather will bring a high of 78 and mostly cloudy skies. The highs the rest of the week are expected in the lower 80s.

A Lawrence man has been honored by the government of Canada for an act of heroism.

A medal presentation will be made this month in Quebec City.
