Paris Frank ‘Barney’ Spooner

? Memorial graveside services for Paris Frank “Barney” Spooner, 78, Pomona, will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Muncie Cemetery in Ottawa.

Mr. Spooner died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at Bay Pines Veterans Affairs Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Fla.

He was born Oct. 28, 1924, in Ottawa, the son of Jason and Anna (Mason) Spooner. He was a lifelong resident of Franklin County. He attended Lawrence public schools and later Chilocco Indian School in Newkirk, Okla.

Mr. Spooner was a heavy duty equipment operator for Rickey Construction and Hamn, Clarkson and Daniels Construction Co. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 and was awarded the Purple Heart.

He married Cecillia Morrow on July 8, 1950. They divorced in 1986. He married Betty Jo (Pitzer) Shelley on Nov. 7, 1992, in Pomona. She died earlier.

Two infant children also died earlier.

Survivors include two daughters, Cathy Spooner-Goodman, Ozawkie, and Rose Rice, Ottawa; two sons, Paris “Bubby,” Sarasota, Fla., and Jason, Verdi; two brothers, Wray, Lawrence, and Paul, Denver; two sisters, Betty Corman and Shirley Patterson, both of Lawrence; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to Franklin County Cancer Society, sent in care of Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory St., Ottawa 66067.
