The hectic pursuit by college coaches for Free State High senior Dain Dillingham continues.

Dillingham, a standout football and basketball player, is undecided about where to go to school next year. As a wide receiver, Dillingham has received scholarship offers from Kansas University and Minnesota, as well as heightened interest from Kansas State and Missouri.

This weekend, though, Dillingham plans to take an official recruiting visit to Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., a school that wants the 6-foot-1, 185-pounder as a basketball talent.

“They’re the only school that’s really recruiting me for basketball,” said Dillingham, who has near-perfect grades. “I figured I should definitely get up there and take a look.”

As a junior, Dillingham averaged 12.0 points per game for the Firebird basketball team, which finished 15-7 and barely missed a trip to the state tournament.

His football skills, though, have more big programs drooling. This season, Dillingham has caught 30 passes for 594 yards and six touchdowns for Free State, now 4-3 heading into Friday’s showdown with Lawrence High.

He also has two interceptions and a 13-yard rushing touchdown to his credit. Last year, he caught 28 balls for 582 yards and four touchdowns.

Dillingham has said he probably would play football in college. Regardless, he knows better than to take an offer from an Ivy League school lightly.

“It’s a good school,” Dillingham said. “It’s Ivy League, and that’s a good chance at getting a good degree.”
