Hospital board gets new faces

The pastor of one of Lawrence’s historic, black churches and the president of one of the city’s oldest businesses are the newest members of Lawrence Memorial Hospital’s board of trustees.

The Rev. Verdell Taylor, pastor of St. Luke AME Church, 900 N.Y., has been appointed to a four-year term on the board by Lawrence Mayor David Dunfield to replace Joanne Hurst, whose second term expired last month.

Hurst had served as an LMH trustee since 1995.

Taylor, a Leavenworth native, has been active in community organizations. He has served on the boards of the following groups: Douglas County Visiting Nurses Assn.; Hospice Care of Douglas County; Community Health Improvement Project; Douglas County Community Corrections Advisory Board; Lawrence Preservation Alliance; and Ecumenical Fellowship Inc.

Joe Flannery, president of Weaver’s Department Store in downtown Lawrence, has been appointed by Dunfield to complete the term of Scott Bailey, who has taken a long-term employment assignment in England.

Flannery, a lifelong Lawrence resident, serves on the United Way campaign, Lawrence Education Achievement Partners, Kansas University Continuing Education Advisory Board and as a director of Douglas County Bank.

Vickie Randel, an LMH trustee since 1996, will lead the board as chairwoman in the coming year. She had held the position of vice chairwoman for the past year.

Randel, a Lawrence native, is president of First State Bank and Trust of Lawrence.

Joining Randel in leading the hospital’s board of trustees during the next year are Donna Osness, who retired from the Lawrence public schools, as vice chairperson; Lindy Eakin, vice provost for administration and finance at Kansas University, as treasurer; and David Corliss, assistant city manager, as secretary.

The board has nine trustees, each of whom is appointed by Lawrence’s mayor and affirmed by the City Commission to a maximum of two four-year terms.

Dr. Michael Zabel, a cardiologist on staff at LMH, is an ex officio member of the board.
