Driver, students hurt in school bus crash

Matfield Green — Ten students and a school bus driver were injured Monday when the bus struck a bridge abutment and ran off a highway in the Flint Hills region of east-central Kansas.

The Chase County Sheriff’s Department said one child was airlifted to a hospital in Wichita, six were taken to a hospital in El Dorado and three more were taken to a hospital in Emporia.

None had life-threatening injuries, a sheriff’s dispatcher said.

The extent of the driver’s injuries was not immediately known, said Trooper Jeff White of the Kansas Highway Patrol.

About 40 grade-school students from the Central school district of Burden were returning from a field trip when the bus crashed shortly before 2:15 p.m., White said.

The bus was southbound on U.S. 177, two miles north of Matfield Green, when it hit the concrete bridge and overturned, White said.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known.
