High school play canceled for complaints

? Garden City High School has canceled performances of a play with a comedic take on U.S. history after at least one parent complained about its content.

“The Complete History of America (abridged),” an irreverent comedy that covers 500 years of U.S. history, was scheduled to be shown at Garden City High School on Nov. 6, 7 and 9. Instead, the students will be performing a work of their own creation that will include excerpts of works by Mark Twain, Harper Lee, Bill Cosby and Dr. Seuss.

The school administration said in mid-September that the play was appropriate after drama teacher Jenny Regier made some changes to eliminate profanity and racy humor. But Regier’s students last week chose to cancel the performances after being told it would be subject to further review.

The play was created by Reed Martin, Adam Long and Austin Tichenor, the same authors of “The Complete Works of Shakespeare (abridged).”

At least one parent, Todd Dauber, complained that Regier needed to make more changes to the play. Dauber said his son, Addison, decided to drop out of the play about three weeks ago because of innuendo in lines he would be speaking with his family present.

Regier said she was told by Lentz last week that she had two choices: “pull the plug on the play” or form a committee “to look at the appropriateness of the show.”

Regier asked the student actors what they wanted, and they voted to abandon the play.

“We knew that fighting it, it would get cut later anyway,” senior Carly Dale said.
