The Knights of Columbus Lawrence Council 1372 announced its Knight and Family of the Month for September.

Gerald Denning was named Knight of the Month. Gerald has been a member of the Knights of Columbus for 37 years. He is a trustee of Council 1372 and a former Grand Knight. Denning, a Lawrence school teacher, helps with Bingo and wedding receptions.

The Valentin Romero family was named Family of the Month. Romero has been a member of the Knights of Columbus for 35 years. He is an outside guard for Council 1372. He also helps with Bingo and landscaping. Romero and his wife, Elizabeth Romero, are active volunteers at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Val Romero is a member of the Spanish choir and is a lay minister. Elizabeth Romero is a member of the choir and cooks for the church’s annual fiesta. The couple have four children and nine grandchildren.

The University Bridge Club announces winners of its Oct. 4 game. Ed and Hazel Stellmacher and Hank and Dottie Miller were hosts.

The blue winners were Virginia Williams, first; Leo Langlois, second; Marian Lang, third; Paul Jordan, fourth; and Carl Schaake, fifth.

The pink winners were Marian Davis, first; Jean Dunn, second; Jane Golden, third; Willie Stoltenberg, fourth; and Mary Fleske, fifth.

General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Kansas District 2 had its 102nd annual convention Sept. 27 in Garnett. Thirty-nine club members and five guests attended workshops, speakers and fellowship. The next convention will be Sept. 25, 2004, in Baldwin. GFWC Lawrence Classics members who attended were Beverly Griffin, Jan Schwartz, Janet Moore, Paula Johnson and Tommi Osburn. The General Federation of Women’s Clubs is based in Washington, D.C.

Members of GFWC Lawrence Classics recently toured O’Connell Youth Ranch, a group home facility for boys, ages 8 to 18, placed in state custody by the courts. The club has donated educational materials to O’Connell Youth Ranch for the past several years.

The Lawrence 299ers Duplicate Bridge Club met Oct. 1. Eight pairs competed in a stratified game that used a Howell movement. Don Brennaman directed the game.

Harry Talley and Don Daugherty finished in first place in A. Judy Bevan and Bob Anderson placed second in A and first in B. Hellen Huffman and Bob Huffman placed third in A. Harriet Olson and Artie Shaw took second in B.

The Lawrence TGIF Duplicate Bridge Club met Oct. 3. Eight tables competed in a stratified game that used a Mitchell movement. Don Brennaman directed the game.

Sitting North-South, Harry Shaffer and Lynn Hui finished first in A. Harriet Olson and Artie Shaw placed second in A, and first in B and C. Kent McCullough and Clyde Romer took third place. Shirley Vaughn and Phyllis Brownlee placed second in B.

Playing East-West, Jean Otney and Wanda Durbin claimed first place. Bobbi McCorkle and Mary Beth Treece finished second in A and first in B and C. Cathy Blumenfeld and Mike Blumenfeld placed third in A and second in B.

The Lawrence Duplicate Bridge Club met Monday. The game attracted 8 1/2 tables and used a Mitchell movement. Virginia Seaver directed the game.

Playing North-South, Gary Joyce and Mary Joyce claimed first place in A, B and C. Eldon Herd and Glenna Herd finished second in A and B. Clyde Romer and Steve Phelps finished third in A and B.

Sitting East-West, Donna Johnson and Paul Heitzman claimed first place. Patt Radford and Betty Collier placed second. Russell LaForce and Emily Foster took third in A and first in B and C. Don Brennaman and Olivier Urruty were second in B.
