Haskell men sputter in loss

For a seven-minute stretch Monday night, everything flowed offensively for Haskell Indian Nations University’s men’s basketball team.

The other 33 minutes were a struggle as the Fightin’ Indians went stale against Central Methodist in a 75-57 loss at Coffin Sports Complex.

“Lately we’ve been playing excellent on offense, and haven’t been so hot on defense,” said HINU coach Jamie Morrison, whose squad suffered its third setback in the last four days. “Tonight it was vice versa, but we couldn’t really afford it to be.”

The Indians had little offense early, throwing away its first four possessions as the Eagles soared to an 11-2 lead.

HINU finally settled into a rhythm, going on a 8-0 run to trail, 11-10, with 11:56 left in the half, but that was the closest HINU would come. The Indians scored nine the rest of the half.

An inside attack by Jordan Willer and John Viehland was good enough for 35 combined points for Central Methodist.

Haskell was led by Corey Ladson’s 20 points.

The Indians will get a much-deserved break this week before traveling Dec. 6 to Iowa to play Graceland.

“I think our fatigue definitely showed tonight with the way we played on offense,” Morrison said.
