Harold L. ‘Hal’ Keltz

Memorial services for Harold L. “Hal” Keltz, 87, San Francisco, formerly of Lawrence, will be announced in spring 2004.

Mr. Keltz died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at Gardiner Hospice House in Phoenix. His body was donated to the University of Arizona medical school in Tucson.

Mr. Keltz was born April 2, 1916, in Philadelphia, the son of Leon and Ann (Rosen) Keltz.

He served in the Navy during World War II. He moved to Lawrence shortly after the war. He moved to San Francisco in September 2002.

Mr. Keltz was a small-business consultant and formerly owned and operated Lawrence Surplus, which was the Levi jeans headquarters for Lawrence from the 1950s to the 1970s. He also worked as a real estate agent for a short time after the sale of his business in 1973.

Mr. Keltz was a member of the Lawrence Jewish Community Center and was former chairman of the Douglas County Democratic Party. He also was a member of the Noon Kiwanis Club for more than 50 years.

He married Dorothy Cohen on Oct. 22, 1944, in Los Angeles. She died Feb. 2, 2002.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Keltz-Hersh, San Francisco; a son, Kenneth W., Alameda, Calif.; and a step-grandson.

The family suggests memorials to the Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix or to the Lawrence Jewish Community Center, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
