Gergen third in presidential series

Only a handful of vouchers remain for David Gergen’s lecture Sunday at the Lied Center.

The political pundit and former presidential adviser will speak at 8 p.m. as the third installment of the Presidential Lecture Series at the Dole Institute of Politics.

As of Wednesday, about 40 free tickets remained for the lecture. Tickets are available through the Lied Center Box Office, which is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. or can be reached at 864-2787.

At 7:45 p.m. Sunday, the unfilled seats will be opened to the public.

Judging by ticket giveaways, Gergen’s lecture is the most popular of this year’s series, which has included Robert Caro, biographer of Lyndon Johnson, and Roger Wilkins, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist. Richard Norton Smith, the director of the Dole Institute, finishes the series Nov. 23 with his final lecture before leaving to direct the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Ill.

Gergen served in the administrations of Presidents Nixon and Ford, then was director of communications for President Reagan.

In 1993, Gergen agreed to serve as counselor to President Clinton on both foreign policy and domestic affairs. Gergen later was special international adviser to Clinton and Warren Christopher, secretary of state.

Since working for the Clinton administration, Gergen has served as editor-at-large at U.S. News and World Report and professor of public service and director for the Center for Public Leadership at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

In 2000 he published “Eyewitness to Power: The Essence of Leadership, Nixon to Clinton.”
