Elvis still rolling in the dough with estate

They are gone, but not forgotten — and certainly not unpaid. Late celebrities’ estates command some hefty annual incomes, according to a ranking of estimated earnings.

Elvis Presley is the king of annual income, generating about $40 million for his estate this year, according to the research by Forbes.com. Peanuts cartoonist Charles Schulz was second, about $8 million behind Elvis. “The Lord of the Rings” author J.R.R. Tolkien was No. 3, with $22 million.

Beatles John Lennon and George Harrison rounded out the top five, with a collective $35 million this year, Forbes.com said.

Back on the list were Frank Sinatra and James Dean. Sinatra’s estate earned an estimated $7 million, while Dean’s had $5 million.

Land a seasonal job

With the holidays approaching, it’s the time when seasonal hiring picks up. Businesses including retailers, shipping companies, restaurants and caterers take on extra help.

If you’re between jobs or hunting for extra holiday cash, a seasonal job could be right for you. But that doesn’t mean just walking into a UPS Store and asking to drive a truck. ResumeDoctor.com has a few tips for landing one of these positions.

  • Start early. Waiting for Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, is a sure source of anguish. Retail staff must be hired and trained well before this day.
  • Register with temporary staffing agencies. Harried employers are likely to be in touch with such firms.

Name that company

I was born in 1966 as Sound of Music, an audio retailer. Today, based in Minneapolis and employing some 80,000 people, I’m North America’s top retailer of consumer electronics, personal computers, entertainment software and appliances. I went public in 1985, and my shares have appreciated tenfold in the past decade. I boast more than 550 retail stores in 48 states and a busy online store, too. I’m opening about 60 stores per year as I grow. I also operate Future Shop and Magnolia Hi-Fi stores. I took in $21 billion in fiscal 2003. Who am I?
