District doles out school suspensions

Five students at Free State High School have been suspended, officials said Tuesday.

Julie Boyle, the district’s communications director, said two male sophomores were suspended for allegedly threatening another sophomore with a knife Thursday.

Lawrence police are investigating, Boyle said.

A disciplinary hearing will be scheduled for the student believed to have been in possession of the knife, Boyle said.

In a separate incident, a Free State senior and two sophomores were suspended for allegedly smoking marijuana Monday off school grounds during the school day.

Boyle said a police officer confiscated drug paraphernalia from the senior, a female. The sophomores were male.

Runza to buy books with percentage of sales

Lawrence Runza restaurants will donate 15 percent of sales earned today to buy books for the Lawrence Public Library.

The fund-raising event is called Great Books for Great Kids and works to promote child literacy.

The chain franchises 66 restaurants in Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado and Iowa. The two Lawrence locations are 2700 Iowa and 3418 W. Sixth St.

Lawrence architect joins state board

Topeka — Lawrence architect Dan Sabatini has been appointed by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to the State Historical Sites Board of Review.

Sabatini is president of Sabatini & Associates Architects Inc.

The board is responsible for nominations to the state and national registers of historic places, and review of the state preservation plan.

Sabatini will serve a three-year term.
