Wellsville ‘playing lot better’

? Never mind that Wellsville High’s football team started the season 0-5.

That’s not important.

What does matter is that it has won four straight games and will start the Class 3A state playoffs at 7 tonight by playing host to Humboldt.

According to Eagles coach Bill Oshel, WHS has improved every time it has stepped on the field.

Some might say the Eagles’ current position — almost identical to last year, when they went 1-5 to start before winning four straight — is due to the fact that they’re a 3A team playing in the Frontier League with predominantly 4A squads, so when districts roll around, their opponents pose less of a challenge.

But Oshel credits his team’s recent success to game-day progress and strong leadership from his club’s nine seniors.

“We played some good competition, but that isn’t the only reason. We’re just playing a lot better as the season rolls along,” Oshel said. “I wish I could put my finger on what’s been making us better as a team, but we’re better offensively and defensively.”

Last year the Eagles advanced to the second round of state before losing to Cherryvale. Wellsville can improve on last year’s outcome with a win.

“We just want to make our season long enough to be as good as we possibly can,” he said.
