Police seek public’s help in identifying suspect

Lawrence Police detectives are asking for assistance in identifying a suspect in an attack on a woman at an adult bookstore.

A 21-year-old woman reported she was grabbed May 22 at Priscilla’s, 1206 W. 23rd St. A surveillance camera caught the suspect on film, but investigators have been unable to identify him, police spokesman Sgt. Mike Pattrick said Friday.

Anyone with information about the suspect can call Crime Stoppers, 843-TIPS (8477). Callers can remain anonymous.

Complaint about district reflects transfer denial

An unsuccessful candidate for Lawrence school board submitted an amended civil rights complaint against the district alleging retaliation for his original grievance.

Brent Garner, defeated in the February primary election, said the complaint was revised after the district denied his daughter, who has a disability, a transfer to Sunflower School.

The fifth-grader has attended Centennial School, which closed this month, and was assigned to Cordley School.

Randy Weseman, Lawrence’s superintendent, said Thursday that the district wasn’t engaged in discriminatory practices. He said parents could appeal the denial of a transfer request to the school board.

In the original complaint, Garner alleged Cordley didn’t comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. He said students in upper grades at Cordley were in classrooms accessible only by stairs. The school has no elevator.

In the campaign, Garner was a critic of plans to close Centennial, East Heights and Riverside schools.
