IN 1963

Sandra Coffman from Pittsburg was the KU Jayhawker Queen for 1963.

Damage in the city as a result of the recent violent rain and wind storm was conservatively estimated at $125,000. Not included in that figure was severe tree loss.

Lawrence’s real estate assessed valuation climbed to more than $28 million, a 3 percent rise from 1962.

IN 1903

From the Lawrence Daily World of May 18, 1903: “Now that the infighting seems to be over, there is only one thing for the members of the Fraternal Aid Association to do and that is to settle down to business. The report is that wholesome laws have been passed and that things will smooth out now after too long a row. …

“There still are a few old wooden sidewalks on Massachusetts Street that are in bad shape and should be repaired. Good walks have been coming surely, although slowly, and it would not be a bad idea for the proper authorities to give the property owners a reminder.”
