‘Teach-in’ will tackle academic freedom

Kansas University students and faculty and others from the community have scheduled a “teach-in” to discuss academic freedom issues.

The event, inspired by state Sen. Susan Wagle’s criticisms of Professor Dennis Dailey’s sexual education class, will begin at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ecumenical Christian Ministries, 1204 Oread Ave.

Scheduled speakers include state Rep. Paul Davis, D-Lawrence; John Hoopes, associate professor of anthropology; Rick Spano, associate dean of the School of Social Welfare; representatives of the Douglas County chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union and several KU students.

FSHS students to play in volleyball tournament

Students at Free State High School will literally eat mud Saturday at the annual outdoor volleyball extravaganza.

The tournament is scheduled from noon to approximately 6 p.m. at Broken Arrow Park, 31st and Louisiana streets. Teams will play until a winner emerges.

More than 30 teams participated last year.

The cost is $5 per person. Fans are welcome.

People interested in playing or volunteering as a referee should contact Cindy Trarbach at Free State at 832-6050.

School district to honor retiring teachers, staff

The Lawrence school district will honor retiring employees and teachers Wednesday at Southwest Junior High School, 2511 Inverness Drive.

Retirees and a series of award winners will be recognized at the 4 p.m. reception. All staff and members of the public are welcome to attend.

Weekend patrol nets drunken-driving arrests

Police arrested four people on suspicion of drunken driving during a weekend “saturation patrol.”

Five Douglas County sheriff’s deputies and four Kansas Highway Patrol troopers took part in the patrol from 11 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday throughout the county.

The officers stopped 31 vehicles and issued 18 tickets for traffic violations.
