National League Roundup: Piazza powers Mets past Padres

Two-run home run in 10th inning decisive in 4-2 triumph

? Mike Piazza has already sat out a suspension, become embroiled in a feud, been slowed by nagging injuries and now been asked about a position switch by his last-place team.

And it’s only mid-May.

Piazza swung things in his direction Saturday, however, hitting a two-run homer in the 10th inning to lift the New York Mets over the San Diego Padres, 4-2.

“With all the situations I’ve gone through in my career, the one constant is it feels good to get on the field,” Piazza said.

Jay Bell led off the 10th with a line single and Piazza followed with a towering drive into the left-field bleachers on a 1-0 pitch from Jaret Wright (1-5).

Piazza’s homer was his fourth of the season. Wright lowered his head and pulled his cap over his eyes as the ball sailed out of the park.

To some degree, it appeared that playing the game was a refuge for Piazza after a week full of distractions.

The All-Star catcher had a benign mole removed from his lower abdomen Monday and was limited to one pinch-hitting appearance during a three-game series against Los Angeles because the skin was too tight for him to put on his equipment.

Brewers 9, Reds 3

Cincinnati — Richie Sexson homered and Milwaukee took advantage of 13 walks to snap Cincinnati’s five-game winning streak. Sexson, Alex Sanchez and Geoff Jenkins each had two of Milwaukee’s 10 hits to help Ben Sheets win for the third time in four decisions.

Braves 6, Giants 3

New York's Mike Piazza, center, is mobbed by teammates after hitting a game-winning home run. Joining in the celebration, from left, are Raul Gonzalez, Timo Perez, Tsuyoshi Shinjo and Ty Wigginton. The Mets defeated San Diego, 4-2, in 10 innings Saturday in New York.

Atlanta — Javy Lopez hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the seventh inning and Atlanta rallied to beat San Francisco, snapping the Giants’ six-game winning streak.

Pirates 5, D’backs 4

Wolf (5-2) struck out six and walked one to notch his fifth career shutout and first this season. He allowed a two-out walk and single in the eighth inning but got Craig Biggio to ground out to third to end the threat.

Expos 6, Dodgers 5

Montreal — Vladimir Guerrero was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as Montreal rallied to defeat Los Angeles. Fred McGriff hit his 483rd career home run for the Dodgers, who had won three in a row.

Cubs 3, Cardinals 2 (10)

Chicago — Alex Gonzalez hit his third extra-inning home run of the season, a solo shot with one out in the 10th that sent Chicago past St. Louis. The Cubs won without Sammy Sosa, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list earlier in the day after having the toenail removed from his right big toe. Gonzalez has four homers this season, and three of them have come in the 10th inning.
