Baker asks La Russa, McClendon to help him

Chicago — Dusty Baker asked St. Louis manager Tony La Russa and Pittsburgh manager Lloyd McClendon to be part of his staff for the All-Star game July 15 at Chicago. The Cubs manager said Friday both accepted.

La Russa’s managerial career began with the White Sox. McClendon, in his third season in Pittsburgh, was born in nearby Gary, Ind., and still resides in Merrillville, Ind.

Tigers bring up Avery

Detroit — The Tigers purchased Steve Avery’s contract from Triple-A Toledo and the left-handed pitcher was in uniform for Friday night’s game at Tampa Bay. The Tigers earlier had sent down Matt Anderson.

Twins demote Cuddyer

Minneapolis — Minnesota Twins rookie Michael Cuddyer was sent to Triple-A Rochester on Friday to make room for utility infielder Denny Hocking, who was activated from the disabled list.

Lugo placed on waivers

Houston — The Astros placed shortstop Julio Lugo on waivers Friday.
