Chad and Kristine Lawhorn, Lawrence, announce the birth of their son, Colby David Lawhorn, born March 30, 2003, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Nathan and Alisha Collins, Lawrence, announce the birth of their daughter, Scheeli Rose Collins, born May 3, 2003, at the Birth and Women’s Center in Topeka. Maternal grandparents are Dave and Cindy Crumbaugh, Boyne City, Mich. Paternal grandparents are Phil and Brenda Collins, Ponca City, Okla. Great-grandparents are Geneva Mahan, Terry and JoAnn Mongar, Shirley McIntire, and Ross and Gladus Stapf.

The 101st annual Overbrook Rural High School alumni banquet will be at 6 p.m. May 24 at Overbrook Methodist Church. The meal will cost $10 per person. Reservations must be made by May 21 and sent to ORHS Alumni Assn., P.O. Box 277, Overbrook 66524. Be sure to include the names of those attending and year of graduation or attendance. Anyone who has attended or taught at ORHS is eligible to attend. The classes of 1928, 1933, 1943, 1953 and 1963 will be honored.

Washburn University freshman Cindy Baker, Lawrence, received a beginning level French award for outstanding work in the classroom. The award was given at the modern languages annual banquet.

Betsy Lee, Lawrence, recently won several awards for her work on Tower Yearbook and the student newspaper, the Northwest Missourian, at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo. The Columbia Scholastic Press Assn. recently honored Lee with 2003 Gold Circle second-place awards for personality profile and sidebar/mini magazine writing. She also earned an award from the Missouri College Media Assn. for second place in the personality sketch category.

Several Free State High School students placed in the Kansas Scholastic Press Assn.’s state contest at Kansas University.

Students who placed were Ryan Schneider, first in layout/double page spread; Claire Vandervelde, first in yearbook copy writing; William Mockry, third in editing; and Kelsey Schelar, third in feature writing.

The 15th annual Douglas County Spring Beef Show was April 26. There were 67 exhibitors.

The four Showmanship classes had 45 youths participating. Caden Lynch, Lawrence, won the reserve champion spot in the 7-to 8-year-old class. In the 9- to 11-year-old class, MacKenzie Flory, Baldwin, won the champion spot, and Colton Lynch received reserve champion. In the 12- to 14-year-old class, Casey Davis, Tonganoxie, was named champion, and Bailey Clanton, Stilwell, earned reserve honors.

Overbrook resident Leah Bond’s shorthorn heifer was chosen as the Supreme Champion Female. Bond also had the Grand Champion Prospect Steer and Reserve Grand Champion Prospect Steer.

The following area residents were named class champions: Tyler Ottensmeir, McLouth, Angus Female; Nick Decker, McLouth, Gelbvieh Female; Casey Davis, Tonganoxie, Hereford Female and Hereford Steer; Cole Clanton, Stilwell, Maine Anjou Female and Shorthorn Steer; Leah Bond, Overbrook, Shorthorn Female, Maine Anjou Steer and AOB and Crossbred Steer; Bailey Clanton, Stilwell, All Other Breeds Female.

Lena Fox and Jessica Tubbs, both students at Free State High School, each have been awarded a Presidential Scholarship at Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa. The scholarship is based on a student’s academic and leadership achievement.

Joanna Beard, Lawrence, is displaying artwork until May 23 in the Mabee Library on Sterling College’s campus. There will be a reception for her after the baccalaureate service on May 23. Beard will be entering the art education field after graduation. She is the daughter of Phil and Eileen Beard, Lawrence.

Dominique Duncan, a senior at Lawrence Free State High School, has been named a University of Chicago Scholar. The University of Chicago Scholars program recognizes students for outstanding achievements during their high school years and for their scholarly promise. Dominique also received a pre-paid tuition award. She has completed almost 100 credit hours at Kansas University, maintaining a 4.0 grade-point average. Dominique received the Black-Babcock KU Mathematics Scholarship, and she has been selected by the KU Chancellor’s Honors Scholars Committee as a Watkins-Berger Scholar. KU’s Summerfield /Watkins-Berger Scholarships are awarded to the top 100 high school student scholars in Kansas. Dominique is the daughter of Tyrone Duncan and Bozenna Pasik-Duncan, Lawrence.

Erin Hodges Parmelee, a 1994 graduate of Lawrence High School, received her doctorate of Jurisprudence degree on Friday. She graduated from Drake University Law School, Des Moines, Iowa, in December 2002. Hodges is a 1998 Kansas University graduate. She has accepted a position with the Bertoche Law Firm in Des Moines.
