Lutheran shuts out Seabury

For the second consecutive home game, the Seabury Academy girls soccer team had chances to score, but suffered a 1-0 setback.

Kansas City Lutheran shut the Seahawks down Monday afternoon at the Youth Sports Inc. fields. Kansas City (Mo.) Barstow beat Seabury by the same score April 29 at YSI.

Lutheran’s Knights (5-4-1) took the lead when sophomore Rachael Gomez chipped the ball to the left side of the net past Seabury freshman goal keeper Lindsey Ahlen in the 34th minute of the second half.

That’s all the Knights would need, but they had to fight for the victory — the Seahawks got a number of shots on goal, but every time the ball went straight at the Lutheran keeper.

“We had our chances,” Seabury coach Coy Weege said. “We had a sturdy defense. Our shots were right on goal. We had a lot of corner-kick opportunities, but we just didn’t execute solid runs.”

Senior Janie Schneider led Seabury’s offensive charge, blazing down the sideline through packs of Knight defenders.

“She did everything we needed except for finding the back of the net,” Weege said. “They triple-teamed her, and she still beat them and managed to get her shot off.”

Schneider rocketed several corner kicks, most of them landing inches from the Lutheran keeper.

“She’s a good player,” Lutheran coach Mark Yessen said. “She can get the ball from the corner to middle of the field. There’s not too many high school players that can do that.”

Several other Seahawks pushed the ball upfield, including freshmen Katie George and Regan Sisson.

“It was really disappointing because we missed so many shots and gave up that goal that (Lutheran) shouldn’t have had,” Schneider said. “It was just a breakdown on defense.”

The Seahawks (1-6) aren’t hanging their heads. Seabury played the entire game in hot weather with no substitutes — Lutheran had 11 subs, enough to field a second team.

“That’s definitely in advantage in 90-degree weather,” Schneider said

Weege agreed.

“Numbers always help, just to be able to talk to your players on the sideline,” he said.

Schneider said she was proud her team hung tough even though the players could catch their breath only during water breaks.

Seabury will play host Thursday to Topeka Cair Paravel.
