Arizona shelves Kim, calls up two pitchers

Phoenix — Byung-Hyun Kim has become the third Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher to go on the disabled list this season.

The Diamondbacks placed the sidearm right-hander on the 15-day DL Sunday, a move retroactive to April 30, because of a bruised right ankle. Kim was injured April 15 when he was hit by the barrel of Preston Wilson’s broken bat.

The team also placed left-handed reliever Stephen Randolph on the 15-day DL with a sprained left oblique muscle. The Diamondbacks called up two pitchers from Triple-A Tucson — right-hander Scott Service and left-hander Chris Capuano.

Both were flying to Phoenix Sunday from Edmonton, where Tucson’s game was snowed out Saturday.

Indians demote Santiago

Cleveland — The Cleveland Indians finally addressed their shaky bullpen by purchasing the contract of reliever Jason Boyd from Triple-A Buffalo and outrighting Jose Santiago there Sunday. Santiago, a surprise to make Indians’ opening-day roster, blew a save Saturday, and opponents were batting .368 (25-for-68) in 15 games against the right-hander. Boyd went 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA in nine outings for the Bisons. He pitched in 23 games for the San Diego Padres last season. Cleveland signed him to a minor league contract in November and invited him to spring training.

Orioles’ Surhoff on DL

Baltimore — Outfielder B.J. Surhoff was put on the 15-day disabled list Sunday by the Baltimore Orioles, who also recalled left-hander Eric DuBose. Surhoff strained his right hamstring running out a double in Saturday’s game against Kansas City. Although he still felt some discomfort Sunday, the 38-year-old veteran hoped to avoid a trip to the DL.

Palmeiro misses start

Cleveland — Texas first baseman Rafael Palmeiro didn’t start Sunday against Cleveland with a bruised right elbow and will continue his chase for his 500th career home run when the Rangers return home. Palmeiro entered Sunday’s game as a pitch-hitter with two outs in the ninth inning and grounded out to first in Cleveland’s 3-1 win. Palmeiro was struck on the elbow by a pitch from Jake Westbrook during the Rangers’ 6-5 win over the Indians Saturday. Palmeiro, with 498 homers, is on the verge of becoming the 19th player in major league history to reach 500 homers — and the second this season. Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs connected last month in Cincinnati.

Hundley placed on DL

Los Angeles — The Dodgers placed backup catcher Todd Hundley on the 15-day disabled list Sunday because of an irritation of his sciatic nerve. The move, retroactive to May 3, was made after Sunday’s 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. It is the eighth time the 14-year veteran has been on the DL. The switch-hitting Hundley is 5-for-25 with a homer and eight RBIs in 12 games. The Dodgers also optioned infielder Jason Romano to Triple-A Las Vegas after he went 1-for-9 in six games. Outfielder Larry Barnes and catcher David Ross were called up from the minors to restore the roster to 25 players.

Yanks’ Jeter takes BP

Tampa, Fla. — Derek Jeter reported no problems after taking batting practice Sunday for the first time since dislocating his left shoulder on opening day. The New York Yankees’ All-Star shortstop, hurt in a collision March 31, took two rounds of 25 swings in a batting cage. Jeter said he will hit on the field Monday. “I’m happy,” Jeter said.

Astros will drop Lugo

Houston — Houston Astros general manager Gerry Hunsicker said Sunday the team either would trade shortstop Julio Lugo or place him on waivers in the coming days. Lugo was arrested Wednesday night after a game against the Atlanta Braves, charged with misdemeanor assault for allegedly attacking his wife at Minute Maid Park before the game. He was designated for assignment Thursday.
