Lions shut out SM North

Lawrence High’s girls soccer team was downright offensive Wednesday night.

In a good way.

The Lions beat Shawnee Mission North, 4-0, at the Youth Sports Inc. fields, doubling their season-high goals for a single game and notching their second win in the last three games.

Not bad, but it could’ve reached double digits.

“We played very well,” LHS coach Keith Nelson said. “We got lots of opportunities to score, we just didn’t convert on all of them. That’s happened a lot this year.”

The Lions (2-8-1) had half a dozen good chances to score in the first 20 minutes, but North goalkeeper Amber Peasley made some great saves and the Lions kept pushing their shots wide.

“Finishing is not something you can learn over the course of a season,” Nelson said. “That’s something that takes years.”

Freshman Megan Johnson finally got LHS on the board, converting a short pass from junior Lesley Belt with 19:59 left in the first half. Senior Lindsay Garito added another goal seven minutes later when she jumped on a botched clear from North and pounded it past the keeper.

She wasn’t in the best mood after the game — she had plenty of chances to score — but admitted the game was a relief compared to the Lions’ typical defensive battles.

Lawrence High's Raya Bowden, left, shoots past SM North's Heather Wille. The Lions won, 4-0, Wednesday at YSI.

“It gave us a good opportunity to practice some things offensively that we hadn’t had a chance to work on before,” Garito said.

Johnson scored again with 10 minutes left in the first half, taking another pass from Belt off a deflection in front of the Indians’ goal.

Garito scored the Lions’ final goal five minutes into the second half when she received a pass from senior Monica Ruiz, dribbled past two North defenders and beat the keeper.

Despite the missed opportunities, the Lions gained some momentum heading into Friday’s game against Kansas City (Mo.) Pembroke Hill at YSI.

“Absolutely,” Nelson said. “This is something we needed.”
