Jayhawks fall to MU in baseball

? One big inning and two little ones doomed Kansas University’s baseball team to a loss in its Big 12 Conference opener.

Missouri rode a seven-run fifth inning to an 11-7 victory Friday over the 19th-ranked Jayhawks.

Both teams were scoreless after four innings, but the Jayhawks (20-7 overall, 0-1 Big 12) took a 2-0 lead in the fifth. Lance Hayes and Ryan Baty each had an RBI single in the inning.

But the Tigers (14-8, 1-3) hit three home runs in the bottom of the fifth, chased starter Kevin Wheeler and bolted to a 7-2 lead.

KU rallied to tie it at 7 in the top of the seventh, as Baty and Tribble each had an RBI and Casey Spanish drilled a three-run homer.

However, the Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh and two more in the eighth to pick up their first Big 12 victory.

The Jayhawks loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, but stranded all three runners.

Game Two in the series will be today.
