Hemenway to speak to lawmakers

Kansas University Chancellor Robert Hemenway plans to ask state legislators Monday to ease up on restrictions that make it more expensive for KU to operate.

Hemenway is scheduled to testify before the Senate Ways and Means higher education subcommittee Monday afternoon.

The chancellor, who follows Kansas State University’s testimony, plans to urge lawmakers to free up KU from certain state regulations so that it can operate in the same way that Washburn University and the state’s 19 community colleges operate.

Hemenway also plans to discuss the proposed state budget’s effect on:

  • The KU Medical Center, citing the possibility of more layoffs.
  • KU’s new Hoglund Brain Imaging Center in Kansas City, Kan.
  • The Medical Student Loan/Scholarship Program, which is designed to provide more primary care physicians to designated medically underserved areas of the state.
