Six Royals pitchers combine on 4-hitter – Kansas City 3, Colorado 0

? Mendy Lopez hit a two-run homer, and six Kansas City Royals pitchers combined on a four-hitter in a 3-0 victory Friday over the Colorado Rockies.

Colorado starter Scott Elarton threw three scoreless innings and retired his first eight batters.

Kansas City's Alejandro Machado, left, is tagged out at the plate by Colorado catcher Ben Petrick in the Royals' 3-0 victory. K.C. blanked the Rockies Friday in Tucson, Ariz.

Elarton, acquired from Houston for Pedro Astacio in 2001, missed last season after having right shoulder surgery in March. He allowed one hit and struck out two.

It was the second successful outing of the spring for Elarton, who pitched two hitless innings in his debut March 2 against Anaheim.

Kansas City starter Miguel Ascencio pitched two innings of one-hit ball and struck out two. The right-hander went 4-7 with a 5.11 ERA as a rookie last season and figures to be the third or fourth starter this year.

The 22-year-old Ascencio made the Royals’ opening day roster as a reliever last season, but worked his way into the rotation and made 21 starts.
