Notebook: Jayhawks wrapped up a share of the league title

Kansas University junior Jeff Graves, who scored eight points and grabbed five boards in 21 minutes, grinned ear-to-ear after the Jayhawks wrapped up a share of the league title with one game to go.

“It feels good. It’s nice to get a ring. I’m too excited to say anything,” Graves said. “Coach was talking all week, if we win we get a ring. It was a big game.”

Bad timeout: Some Texas Tech fans yelled insults at KU’s bench after coach Roy Williams called a timeout with 30 seconds left, the game in hand, 65-56.

Some of Tech’s assistant coaches took a long look at the KU huddle during the timeout. Tech coach Bob Knight quickly shook Williams’ hand at game’s end and hustled away.

“I made a bullcrap call at the end. I shouldn’t have called a timeout,” Williams said. “I didn’t know if they were going to be pressing. We had Bryant Nash in the game, and he’s not normally in there at the end.

“That was a bullcrap timeout. It upset some people. It was bad judgment on my part. I can make some mistakes, too.”

Collison honored again: Kansas senior Nick Collison has been named Big 12 Conference player of the week for the third time this season. The 6-foot-9, 255-pound Collison scored 24 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in Saturday’s 79-61 Senior Day victory over Oklahoma State, just three days after collecting 15 points and 12 boards in an 85-45 rout of Texas A&M.

Latimore in no hurry: Former Halstead High all-state forward Dennis Latimore, who left the University of Arizona’s basketball team last week, will discuss transfer options over spring break with his mother, former Halstead coach Mark Fox told the Web site goAZcats.com.

Fox said “three or four schools currently in the top 25” had expressed interest in Latimore.

He did not name names.

Williams has said he cannot comment on Latimore in accordance with NCAA recruiting rules.

“He wants to go to a school where he can be a major contributor and be a factor on a team,” Cox said. “So far, a number of Big 12 schools, a couple Big 10 schools and some Missouri Valley schools have expressed interest.”

Fox said the 6-foot-8, 235-pound sophomore left Arizona’s team over playing-time issues.

NCAA talk: No Big 12 team has earned an NCAA bid with less than a 9-7 league record. No more than six teams from the Big 12 have earned NCAA bids in one year.
