Tonganoxie: Tie broken in primary; Truesdell advances

A tie for the fourth-place spot in the Tonganoxie City Council race was broken Friday, allowing James Truesdell to advance to the general election over Mike Weston.

Truesdell and Weston had tied for the fourth-place spot in the primary Tuesday, each getting 80 votes.

Friday’s canvass by Leavenworth County commissioners gave Truesdell an additional vote from a provisional ballot.

Other candidates advancing to the general election are Ron Cranor, with 121 votes; Lois Seelbinder, 99 votes and Velda R. Roberts, with 84 votes.

Schools: Chamber backs bond

The Lawrence Chamber of Commerce’s board is endorsing the public school district’s proposed $59 million bond issue.

“The board voted to support the bond issue because of the benefits this program provides to our students and the operational savings it affords to the district,” board chairman Kelvin Heck said Friday.

The vote was unanimous.

Voters will decide April 1 whether to approve or reject the bond, which allocates $59 million for school construction and renovation.

The plan includes consolidation of East Heights and Centennial schools. Combined with closure of Riverside School in May, the consolidations are estimated to create $1.4 million annually in operational savings.

A recent chamber survey indicated that education was the top priority of chamber members.
