KU loses for first time in seven games

? Kansas University’s baseball team fell to Middle Tennessee State, 6-5, Friday in a Music City Challenge game contested in front of 428 fans at Smith Field.

The loss dropped the 17th-ranked Jayhawks to 11-4 and snapped their six-game win streak.

Middle Tennessee jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Nate Jaggers’ base hit into to left field that drove in Chuck Akers from second base.

Sean Flynn helped Kansas take its first lead in the top of the third, blasting a two-run home run, his second of the season.

MTSU evened the score in the fifth when it began the frame with back-to-back doubles, one of them driving in the tying run.

Ryan Baty answered with a single through the left side to drive in Lance Hayes from second and put KU ahead, 3-2.

The Blue Raiders chased KU starter Kevin Wheeler by putting three runs on the board in the sixth inning and taking a 5-3 lead. Wheeler worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits and striking out five.

Matt Tribble led off the seventh with a triple off the right-field wall, extending his hitting streak to 15 games, and later scored on a double by Casey Spanish. Flynn singled in Spanish, tying the game at 5.

Middle Tennessee took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh by adding one run off Jayhawk reliever Brandon Johnson. The Free State High product was handed his first loss of the season after facing eight batters and allowing one unearned run.

Kansas will face Lipscomb at 2 p.m. today in Nashville, Tenn.
