Brewers batter Cubs in 10th

Kieschnick's home run sparks six-run inning, 12-6 victory

? Brewers manager Ned Yost found out how valuable Brooks Kieschnick is.

Kieschnick led off the 10th inning with a pinch-hit homer and Geoff Jenkins added a three-run home run as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Chicago Cubs, 12-6, Wednesday.

Keith Ginter hit the Brewers first pinch-hit home run of the season in the seventh inning.

Kieschnick, used both as a reliever and a pinch-hitter by the Brewers, homered off Cubs reliever Todd Wellemeyer (1-1), who allowed six runs — five earned — in the 10th. It was Kieschnick’s third home run of the season.

“He’s been swinging the bat great and he has been pitching good, too. He’s been a good addition for our ball club,” Yost said.

Kieschnick played outfield for the Cubs in 1996-97.

Two of Kieschnick’s three home runs have come against the Cubs.

“It is nice, but you want home runs against anybody,” Kieschnick said. “As long as we go out there and get a win it doesn’t matter who we are playing.”

The Cubs were without reliever Kyle Farnsworth, who was battling a stomach flu.

Milwaukee's Brooks Kieschnick connects for a 10th-inning home run against the Cubs. The Brewers won, 12-6, Wednesday in Chicago.

“No matter what happened today it just didn’t seem to work,” Cubs manager Dusty Baker said.

Pirates 6, Expos 5

Montreal — Pinch-hitter Kenny Lofton drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly as Pittsburgh scored three unearned runs in the ninth inning then held on for a win over Montreal. Reggie Sanders and Jeff Reboulet homered for Pittsburgh, which ended a three-game losing streak.
