Raiders adjust to Ponca pitcher

Lawrence prevails, 6-1, in Al Ice Wood Bat Classic

Lawrence Raiders coach Carl Brooks said he hoped his club hadn’t wasted any of its 13 hits in an 11-1 thrashing of Claremore, Okla., in the opening day of the Al Ice Memorial Wood Bat Classic at Hoglund Ballpark.

For the first four innings against Ponca City, Okla., Friday, it looked as if the Raiders might have done just that until they put up four runs off three hits in the fifth inning and two more runs in the sixth to seal a 6-1 win.

The Raiders (15-4) fell victim to numerous ground balls and popups early, thanks to opposing pitcher Luke Munyun, a lefty whose slow delivery posed quite a problem during the first four innings.

“We haven’t seen anybody like that all year,” Brooks said. “He had us off balance, but by the time we got to the fifth inning most of our guys were coming up for the third time. Some of our guys did a great job adjusting.”

Lawrence third baseman Tyler Blankenship started the adjustment process in the fifth inning with a leadoff single.

“He was real slow to the plate, but everyone knew they could do it,” Blankenship said of finally reaching base off Munyun. “No one pressed.”

The Raiders played their fair share of small ball — instead of gobs of extra-base hits like Thursday — to take control of the game with infield hits, grounders and stolen bases.

“Every night’s a different night,” Brooks said. “You have to adjust and do what the situation calls for.”

Andrew Pyle (10) is congratulated by Lawrence Raiders teammate Taylor Martin after scoring in the fifth inning. Lawrence smacked Ponca City, Okla, 6-1, in the Al Ice Memorial Woodbat Classic Friday at Hoglund Ballpark.

Lawrence did, though, put up two triples, by Andrew Pyle and Derek Bailey, for insurance. Pyle went 2-for-4 with four RBIs.

The Raiders finished with eight hits.

Munyun wasn’t the only pitcher causing headaches. In just his second start all season, Lawrence pitcher Matt Lane had nine strikeouts, including three in the third inning.

“It’s nice to get in a routine again,” Lane said after missing much of the first part of the season with all-star games. “My slider worked pretty good tonight. That’s kind of my bread-and-butter pitch.”

Lane only allowed four hits to Ponca City (4-16) to improve his record to 1-1.

The Raiders play Arkansas City at 7:30 tonight. With a win, the Raiders will automatically go to the tournament semifinals. There are other scenarios that can land them there as well, such as a Ponca City win over Claremore today.
